Steps to employment
Over 18? Unemployed? Steps to Employment has been set up to give you invaluable training and work experience. If you want to find a job, or go on and do a higher-level course, like an apprenticeship, then Steps to Employment is a brilliant stepping-stone.
You will receive the same as your benefit
It depends on your circumstances, but you will receive an amount that’s the same as your benefit and you may be entitled to a training allowance.
Work Focused Learning
Are you lacking confidence? Not sure what job you want to do? Never done any learning before? If so, Work Focused Learning is great way to take the first steps into training and you could get a recognised qualification at the end of it.
Routeways to Work
If you have an idea of what type of job you want to do then you may be offered this option, if a suitable opportunity has been identified by the Department for Work and Pensions or Jobcentre Plus. In which case, you will complete an assessment and if successful, you will follow a training programme tailored to the current or future needs of a particular business or economic sector; and you may be offered a job interview at the end of it.

Traineeships
If a lack of skills or confidence has been holding you back, and you’re under 19, a Traineeship could help you get a job, or progress to a higher-level course, like an apprenticeship.
Will you be paid?
You will receive an allowance if you join the Traineeship programme. For further information contact your Careers Wales adviser or your training provider.
There are two entry levels to Traineeships, so you’ll find the right one for you.
- Engagement
If you are not sure what you want to do, or a little nervous about getting started this is for you.
- Level 1
Enter this level if you know the type of job you want, and are ready and able to start full time learning at this level.
