Gay cooks up a new career
It’s never too late to learn, as Gay Jervis from Tredegar found out when she stepped back into the classroom to brush up on her literacy and numeracy skills.
“After college I plan to go to catering college, I’ve always wanted to work in catering ever since I was a child, but in life things don’t always go to plan,” explains Gay. “Now I’ve got the time to come back to college and brush up on my education, and hopefully achieve the career I’ve always wanted.”
Gay concludes: “Studying at Coleg Gwent is brilliant. It’s given me much more confidence to go for the career I want. The Campus is great; I’ve enjoyed everything about being here and my course.”

Iris proves it’s never too late
Stepping back into the classroom was certainly something new for Iris Jones from Tredegar who is in the second year of a Return to Learn course. “At first studying seemed quite a challenge as I hadn’t done it for twenty years, but it soon got easier,” explains Iris, who is planning on using her new qualifications to get a secretarial or administrative job.
“Not only am I getting qualifications to improve my career prospects, I’ve also met new friends and my confidence has really grown. It’s made me do new things I would never have been able to do before coming to college, it’s really brought me out of myself.”
“New skills I’ve learnt on my course include communications skills and computers skills – I couldn’t switch on a computer before I came to college and now I’m using spreadsheets! I passed my GCSE English last year and I’m doing maths this year.”
